After many failed attempts to redesign and improve the user experience of the Wolters Kluwer Axcess Tax Suite, my team was approached to bring the entire platform into the cloud, add collaboration features, and dramatically improve the application—which was full of friction at nearly every turn. The final product exceeded the expectations of the Wolters Kluwer stakeholders and SMEs alike—and user testing proved a delight to users.

01

Return Manager

The process of creating, preparing, and collaborating on returns starts with “Return Manager,” where the user can perform bulk actions, customize their experience, and track the progress of federal and state filing statuses—among many other things.

02

Tax Prep

This is the bread-and-butter of the Axcess Tax platform—where all of the data entry happens and teams collaborate. One of the biggest challenges with the previous system included rigid pathways that required expert knowledge to navigate and use the platform. Further, users couldn’t collaborate in any meaningful way, each return would be “locked” when a user was editing it. To address these issues, the navigation, workspace, and tooling was overhauled from the ground up (the form UI was out of scope) to allow for multiplayer functionality down to the field level on any given form, customizable navigation for different team roles, and flexible pathways to accomplish tasks.

03

Printing & Correspondence Manager

A series of tools were developed to streamline communication, internal review, and income filing, two in particular were very complex and required additional attention. Return printing is highly customizable, allowing for data selection, obfuscation, and template creation. Correspondence required a highly integrated variable (keywords) and templated content (paragraphs) library, allowing for large returns to be created automatically and customized on a per return basis.
